I really wanted to make a post about Joan Jonas as she is one of my favorite living artists. Usually I'm not particularly sensitive to video art and I've rarely been exposed to any performance art but seeing performances and installations by Joan Jonas in Geneva two years ago really changed my mind as her work is so incredible poetic. My favorite piece by far was 'Mirage' which takes up many themes from her previous pieces but in a much more abstract sort of way. Her performance is beautiful because her technical inexperience in choreography allows her to convey so much emotion without being held back by anything.
Joan Jonas started making art at a time where there were very few women artists and decided to start experimenting with a media which very little people knew and where women could be the pioneers. Many of her pieces are extremely androgynous, almost making a statement by the absence of any male orfemale characteristics and in that way leaving the focus on the topics she is exploring.
